This book is worth your money, no matter what sort of art you are creating. You will be inspired, expand your knowledge, and want to consistently enjoy life the way Stanchfield did. Get this and the second volume. They are worth your hard earned money.

This book is a wonderful surprise. Walt Stanchfield's lessons have been transcribed so that you get his voice speaking to you form across the years - and what an inspiring voice it is!
I expected great lessons in Disney style drawing and animation and I got those - in abundance! How life would have been different if I'd had these lessons in squash and stretch and drawing the gesture ("Draw the verb in front of you, not the noun!"). But the real treasure is how he goes beyond the drawing lessons into lessons about how to be creative, how to live life!
Sometimes it's about inspiring you to draw: "...Whether your heart is set on the fine arts or on animation, quick sketching is the shortest route to training yourself for capturing those spontaneous gestures and poses that are so essential to good drawing. Break one of your bad habits today. Which one? The habit of not sketching."
Other times he goes beyond this: "You must create. The injunction of life is to create or perish. Good physical and mental conditioning are necessary to do this. Remember this: the creative energy that created the universe created you, and its creative power is now in you, motivating you, urging you on - always in the direction of creative expression. I have a formula: "Impression minus expression equals depression." This is especially applicable to artists. We have trained ourselves to be impressed (aware) of all the things around us, and in the natural course of our lives those impressions cry out to be expressed - on paper, on canvas, in music, in poetry, in animated film. So shape up!"

Most of us know only of Walt Disney but never heard of the other Walt, Walter Stanchfield. He worked on every full length animated Disney release until 1986, "The Great Mouse Detective". Spent a great deal of his time training many of the greatest animators of our time . Among his students are Don Bluth, Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles), and John Lassater of Pixar. This book is a testament to the greatness of the man. No doubt, a man of genius.
This book is a direct peek into some of the secrets inside the Disney animation. A more serious approach, which comprises of lectures and tutorial text. Very informative and full of tips for those who want to get themselves get involved more and more in depth into the world of animation. Most importantly, it teaches you how to breath life and put heart into your creation.

Excellent compilation! Great insight into the process of the instructor to get the animators to see the 'big picture' when honing skills to draw for animation!
See what Bird, Lasseter, Burton and Keane were shown and taught when they were beginning their animation careers.
Packed with notes and drawings, the direction of these handouts is a valuable and educational book for the aspiring animator, but will probably hold no appeal for anyone with just a passing interest in the processes behind animation.
Highly recommended for animators, though!

This book is better than I expected. It's a very big book full of amazing tips for animators at any level of knowledge. The way it explains how you can give life and shape to characters is very simple and efficient, it can be used for animators, illustrators and character designers. I bought the two volumes and they are both really helpful.
