My previous complaints with the series was that many of the previous Hell Girl clients followed the same formula & didn't really seem to have that much of a need to summon HG's services. The previous volume & this volume have shown an incredible change in the formula so far, much to my delight.
This volume returns to the chapter story mode with several notable tales such as a girl with an incredibly abusive father & a girl who wishes to summon HG to deal with a nasty ex-friend... only to discover that she's not the only one who summoned HG to deal with her.
This volume really did put an interesting spin on the previous formula, with one character who really did have a life or death need to summon HG as well as a girl who has to deal with the harsh reality of what it is to send someone to hell. People had promised me that the series would get better & it has. Consider the first 2 volumes an overly long prelude to volumes 3 & 4, which really get the meat of the story going.
