5 out of 5 stars After 42 years of marriage, our favorite recipes still come from this cookbook!   June 23, 2008

My mom had a copy of this cookbook and I remember her faithfully watching Chicago's Francois Pope's cooking show when I was a teenager in the early 1960's. I believe the program was called Creative Cooking and Francois had two sons who assisted him on the show. Our family favorites came from this book so it was no surprise when I received a copy of the book for a wedding shower gift in 1967! My book had to finally be taped together to preserve it.
This is the cookbook I always go back to even though I have an extensive cookbook collection. The recipes also became the favorites of our five children, all grown now with families of their own. It was no surprise to my husband when I started a search for copies of the book so that each one of our children will have a special anniversary present!

The was the first cookbook I received and learned from and it has turned out to be one of my all time favorites. I received this book in the early 70s and "cut my cooks teeth" on it. Since then, I have graduated from culinary school -- and I still refer back to this worn and much-loved text. The first copy I have literally worn out -- I am now on my second copy! I consider this book to be a MUST HAVE for every kitchen.

My family and I have been trying to track down as many copies of the cookbook as we can. Antoinette Pope was my Great Aunt. She is my grandmothers sister. Just reading the comments that people have written about my great aunt, is so wonderful. I grew up learning how to cook out of her book. To all of you, who have this amazing cookbook, cherish it and continue to pass on her recipes to your loved ones.

when i got married in 1986, my husband asked me what cookbook i wanted. he was figuring on pillsbury, betty crocker, etc. nope. told him i wanted this book. he hunted the bookstores and could not find. finally one of the bookstores said it could be gotten, but it is a special order and would cost $50.00. he was upset with the price, but since i wanted no other book, he got it. when we got married, i could not cook at all. i grew up with this cookbook and knew what things were to taste like. today, almost 22 years later, my husband says it was the best $50.00 he ever spent. it has helped me become the cook that i am today. and it has helped me cook things that would have been impossible. if you can get this book, please do. it does all kinds of cooking. chinese, italian, french, etc. it has the most wonderful recipe for butter cookies. the cheese cake is to die for. all professional tasting. and professional looking.

My mother and mother-in-law both had the 1953 edition of this wonderful cookbook. I bought the 1973 edition shortly after it came out and good thing, as Mom's was well-worn. I gave Mom's to my brother. The best recipes? Their pie crust (can't fail), Italian meatballs, Tomato Sauce, Egg Rolls, Shrimp de Jonghe, Chicken Alfredo and on and on. All of the editions even have a Q&A on cake baking tips (why cakes fall, etc.) which is a great help to frustrated bakers like myself. And, they teach you how to entertain with style and elegance when setting your table. Even though there are no photos to show you how-to-do-it, even a beginner can succeed if they follow the instructions. I learned how to make a meringue, bake bread and pipe frosting successfully when I first started cooking. I always remember my dear Mother whenever I open this wonderful cookbook!
