Product Description
What do we wish most for our children? Next to being healthy, we want them to be happy, of course! Fortunately, a wide array of scientific studies show that happiness is a learned behavior, a muscle we can help our children build and maintain.

Drawing on what psychology, sociology, and neuroscience have proven about confidence, gratefulness, and optimism, and using her own chaotic and often hilarious real-world adventures as a mom to demonstrate do’s and don’ts in action, Christine Carter, Ph.D, executive director of UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, boils the process down to 10 simple happiness-inducing steps.

With great wit, wisdom, and compassion, Carter covers the day-to-day pressure points of parenting—how best to discipline, get kids to school and activities on time, and get dinner on the table—as well as the more elusive issues of helping children build healthy friendships and develop emotional intelligence. In these 10 key steps, she helps you interact confidently and consistently with your kids to foster the skills, habits, and mindsets that will set the stage for positive emotions now and into their adolescence and beyond. Inside you will discover

• the best way avoid raising a brat—changing bad habits into good ones
• tips on how to change your kids’ attitude into gratitude
• the trap of trying to be perfect—and how to stay clear of its pitfalls
• the right way to praise kids—and why too much of the wrong kind can be just as bad as not enough
• the spirit of kindness—how to raise kind, compassionate, and loving children
• strategies for inspiring kids to do boring (but necessary) tasks—and become more self-motivated in the process

Complete with a series of “try this” tips, secrets, and strategies, Raising Happiness is a one-of-a-kind resource that will help you instill joy in your kids—and, in the process, become more joyful yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource   August 11, 2010
A. Harpe
This is one that I will read over and over again and am already planning on sharing it with my friends. Christine Carter combines some of the best research in the field of happiness and child development including one of my favorites Carol Dweck to deliver a practical and positive way to parent. I would buy this book for the bibliography alone, but Carter does a great job of explaining how important it is to raise optimistic, grateful and empathetic children. She also explains simple ways that we can change our approach so that our children feel secure, loved and more mindful of the world around them. As a teacher I can use these lessons in the classroom and as a parent I will definitely be putting many of her ideas into practice.

5 out of 5 stars A competent source of information for parents!   June 22, 2010
Susanne F. O'Brien (Hopkinton, NH, US)
I feel strongly that the knowledge passed on by Christine Carter is accurate and well-documented. She presents her "Raising Happiness" viewpoints both on personal experience and on her background teaching and lecturing on Emotional Intelligence, as a means of calming the soul and finding anchors of pleasantness in every day. I also teach about living in the present moment rather than dwelling on the past, and I also use the sensations of breathing, listening, touch, and loving kindness in my meditations to help myself and others learn techniques that can be guideposts for happiness. I intend to order a second copy of the book to share with my daughter, who has a toddler, and also combines family with a full-time profession.I appreciate Amazon.com for it's comments which led me to buy the book.
Best Regards, Prof. O'Brien,MA, Concord's Community College, N.H.T.I.,where I teach "Communications" and "English" courses.

5 out of 5 stars Best parenting book I've read.   June 18, 2010
S. Goodwin (San Francisco, CA United States)
This is really the best parenting book I've read so far. I've read other great ones, but this book is so important because it touches on all the key areas you need to focus on to raise happy children. It's full of practical advice and examples, and quite fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Happiness for kids AND parents   June 16, 2010

This is just a fantastic book. It's filled with information on psychology, neurobiology, and brain chemistry, and everyday tips for maximizing a positive state of mind for your children and yourself. I really like the focus on getting parents into a positive state of mind! It has really helped my parenting to be more aware of my own feelings and needs and make sure that I'm taking care of myself so that I can take the BEST care of my kids. This book doesn't make me feel like I parent inadequately, nor does it give a particular formula to follow. You can adapt the information in the book to fit your own parenting style. I love this book and am going to re-read it for many years to come!

5 out of 5 stars Relief for Recovering Perfectionists   May 10, 2010

Obviously, I'm not the only one who thinks Carter's book is terrific, and the reviews below mention some of the best qualities of Raising Happiness. But I'd like to add one more point. Carter encourages perfectionists to break the habit. Her descriptions of the dangers of a faultless life are compelling, but she also takes the next step by admitting her own parental shortcomings. I may not have a PhD on the topic, but Carter's transparency gives me hope that I'll be able to increase the happiness quotient in my house even if... strike that! ... increase the happiness quotient in my house BECAUSE we will never approach perfection. (Told you I am still recovering!)
