Product Description Doctor Impossible—evil genius, would-be world conqueror—languishes in prison. Shuffling through the cafeteria line with ordinary criminals, he wonders if the smartest man in the world has done the smartest thing he could with his life. After all, he's lost every battle he's ever fought. But this prison won't hold him forever. Fatale—half woman, half high-tech warrior—used to be an unemployed cyborg. Now, she's a rookie member of the world's most famous super-team, the Champions. But being a superhero is not all flying cars and planets in peril—she learns that in the locker rooms and dive bars of superherodom, the men and women (even mutants) behind the masks are as human as anyone. Soon I Will Be Invincible is a wildly entertaining first novel, brimming with attitude and humor—an emotionally resonant look at good and evil, love and loss, power and glory.

Half a good book November 13, 2008 Antboy (Greer, SC) The first half of this book is excellent as we really get into Dr Impossible and how he became a supervillain/evil genius. Unfortunately, the logic of his relationship with his Superman like nemesis and Lois Lane secret love just falls apart during the second half. As does his poorly thought out scheme to defeat the Justice League knockoff and rule the world.
The parts of the book following Femme Fatale are also largely disposable. She's supposed to be our POV character but the POV is pretty bland, we care a lot more about Dr Impossible then her.
I suggest anyone who thinks this might be interesting check out Josh Whedons' Dr Horrible Musical starring Neil Patrick Harris as Dr Horrible available free online. The plots fairly similar but is much more consistent.
Loved This Book November 5, 2008 M. Frumkin (USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a self professed fanboy and comic book geek I loved this book. I hope there is a sequel.
Great fun! October 20, 2008 L. Sonko (San Francisco) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
The audiobook is read fantastically. Every word spoken is offered up by our protagonists with delicious aplomb.
This book is great fun!
Very, Very Fun October 1, 2008 Andrew Corsa 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had a day off from work, and, on a whim, I picked this book off a shelf at Barnes and Noble and started to read. Four hours later, I was still sitting in Barnes and Noble, reading. This book had swallowed me whole!
It's a really fun book, with easy, fast language. Its characters are cheesy but engaging - fun figures based very loosely on popular superheroes like Batman, Superman, and the X-Men.
Typically, I don't much appreciate the review-quotes that publishers put on a book's cover. But I think this quote from Wired Magazine is apt: "Every comic-book cliche in this witty, stunning debut is lovingly embraced, then turned inside out."
That's exactly what this book does; it has fun with the superhero genre. It takes a bunch of elements from comic books and movies, tosses them up in the air, rearranges them, and adds some neat, new elements drawn from popular literature and, I would imagine, the author's personal experience. And the author, Austin Grossman, does it all with fast, fun prose.
Of course, this book is nothing earth shattering. Austin Grossman is no Salinger or Shakespeare, and I don't even think he meets Stephen King's level. The book doesn't have that kind of depth. But does that matter? It was a fun book. I finished the book several hours after leaving Barnes and Noble. It wouldn't let me put it down. I love that books can be that engaging.
Couldn't put it down September 29, 2008 Kid Kyoto (Beijing) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic novel for comic book fans. Narration alternates between the villainous Doctor Impossible and the heroic cyborg Fatale. Together they give you both sides of the comic book equation.
Grossman gives some thought to how a superhero world might work but doesn't overwhelm the reader with details.
The end result is a lot like the classic book Astro City where comic book cliches are fleshed out and made new again.
Strongly recommend it.
