Product Description
When photographer and writer Shreve Stockton decided to move back to her beloved New York from San Francisco, she decided to take her time and make the trip on her Vespa. When she reached Wyoming, Shreve was captivated by the red dirt, the Bighorn Mountains, and the wide-open spaces. Unable to shake the spell of the "cowboy state," she soon found herself trading her New York City apartment for a house in Ten Sleep, Wyoming -- population 300.

Shreve threw away her cell phone and took to the rules of the land, adjusting to a lifestyle that was a near antithesis to that of the urban jungle. Time is of a different essence, nature is both livelihood and enemy, deer and coyote mark the dawn and dusk. After she met a local cowboy by chance on the side of the road, first a friendship and then a romance blossomed between them.

When Shreve was unexpectedly presented with a ten-day-old coyote pup whose parents had been shot for killing sheep, she had a choice to make. Despite her reservations and the terror of her tomcat Eli, Shreve decided to do the unthinkable -- to raise the coyote pup she came to call Charlie in her 12 12-foot log cabin.

In arresting prose and illuminated with Shreve's breathtaking photography, The Daily Coyote is at once Shreve's month-by-month exploration of Charlie's first year and a meditation on the nature of wildness versus domestication, of nature versus nurture, and of forgiveness, loyalty, and love in all its forms.

4 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!   January 9, 2009
D. Auerbach (Tucson, AZ.)
Shreve did a wonderful job writing this book. Each chapter is a month by month overview of Shreve's understanding of and growth of this most beautiful wild creature. She definitely includes more than enough pictures with each chapter so that the reader can visualize the puppy growing and changing into a full grown coyote. It was very captivating and I couldn't wait to continue reading the book each day. It would be nice to have a sequel to this one!

5 out of 5 stars Grabbed me from the get go   January 7, 2009

For any woman who has wanderlust or a sense of adventure, this is a good read. Having been to Wyoming and also felt the pull there, but not having been back,(yet!) I loved reading the author's story of just diving in and doing it. Anyone who has a love for wide open spaces and wildlife will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars So much more than an animal story   January 6, 2009
Melanie E. Lippert (Pittsburgh, PA)
When I picked up this book, being a fan of the blog, I expected more fun stories about Charlie and his antics. I was pleasantly surprised in so many ways. Shreve shares honest and intimate emotions and experiences and such wisdom - wisdom I hope to carry with me all my life. I can't properly express how honored I feel being allowed this glance into her life. This book is so much more than an animal story, it is a intelligent reflection of life and the relationships that make it. Thank you Shreve.

5 out of 5 stars A rare account   January 6, 2009
M. Hertz (Hastings on Hudson, NY, USA)
This is a tender and honest account of a rare human and animal bond. The words are engaging and the phopographs are beautiful. it was a treat to read.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book   January 5, 2009
Jorja's Mom (Cincinnati, OH)
I bought this book after having been fan of The Daily Coyote blog for several months. Ms. Stockton's photos are amazing (I'd buy a book of just her photos), as is this story. The story of raising a coyote and the challenges that brings is captivating. I was a little less captivated by the other storyline of her boyfriend's emotional issues. I would have preferred to have that story either tied in more closely or featured less. For me it distracted from Charlie's story. Still, an excellent book, and I hope she writes one about her vespa drive across the country.
