Training foals September 12, 2009

I grew up around horses and have owned them off and on for some 30 years now. I've raised and trained foals in the past but I thought some new ideas might be helpful. So I tried "Bringing Up Baby'. Well I love his approach, however he is starting out with a foal who is afraid of people and he teaches from that perspective. (My foal was in my pocket all the time.) So some of his training didn't work for my situation, however much of it does. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone starting a foal. He takes you into the second year of saddling also. Easy to read and understand, lots of - how to - hands on photo's. I think if you will use his training method you will end up with a horse that will be a pleasure and a great companion for years to come.

It's a good book and I like all of John Lyons' material. I bought it before my colt was born and while I like the excercises, they seem for more like a one or two year old or a foal that's never been handled or imprint trained. Alot of his stuff uses the round pen to work and that's fine, but you can't really lunge them till they're two and while you can do what he does in here younger, because it's very light, you don't want to over do it and mess up their limbs or back. Like I said, it's a good book, but more for older foals who have never been handled or imprint trained and are possibly weaned already. I would go with Robert Millars Imprint Training if you are wanting to get a good foundation from the start and this book if you are getting your foal as a weanling. It's excellent for what it is, but I see it being used in limited circumstances.

This book is a great book when starting your weanling on a course of training. Unfortunately for me I had already read Imprint Training by Dr Robert Miller and most of the training covered by John Lyons had already been covered in the Imprint Training book. However if you were to start training at weanling stage this would be an excellent book to begin with. Both methods are very similar the choice is up to the individual whether they wish to begin training @ birth or wait until they are weaned. All in all a very informative book. Highly recommended.
