Product Description

When you have bipolar disorder, it can sometimes seem like mood swings are keeping you from being the person you want to be. You may alternate between feelings of depression and overexcitement even though what you really want is to find a healthy balance between the two. This easy-to-use workbook presents a set of skills you can learn that will help you find that balance, become more independent, and stay focused on the big-picture goals that are most important to you.

The Bipolar Workbook for Teens includes exercises and worksheets that will help you learn skills drawn from a special technique called dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). DBT skills can help people with bipolar disorder improve their relationships with friends and family and calm themselves when their emotions get really overwhelming.

Working through this book will help you:

  • Recognize and respond to your emotional triggers
  • Create a crisis plan and find support
  • Get a handle on addictive behavior
  • Maintain friendships and get along with your family

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for teens   April 24, 2010

I speak all over NJ to teens and adults about coping with grief and many types of loss. I always discuss with them mental health disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder (whether for themselves or regarding living with someone who is affected.) I bring along this book to show teens at my presentations. The book is easy to read and includes great tools, exercises and strategies for coping with bipolar disorder. Many teens who have been newly diagnosed or even those who have been silently suffering for some time have taken down the book title to order for themselves. Many adults have also used it and found it helpful as well. I highly recommend this book.

I am a mental health professional and work with people who live with Bipolar Disorder. I have facilitated a DBT program for over five years. This new book by Sheri VanDijk and Karma Guindon presents the DBT concepts in easy to read, plain language. She uses examples that are relevant to teen readers which makes it fun to read, as well. The book provides lots of interesting exercises to help the reader understand the impact of Bipolar Disorder on their thoughts, feelings and behaviors as well as offering many practical suggestions for using skills to improve quality of life. I found this an inspiring and hopeful resource dedicated to teens. I highly recommend this workbook!
